Mob Psycho 100 Review

Mob Psycho 100 is a fresh breath of air when it comes to animation, character development, and storytelling.

Mob Psycho 100 tells the story of Shigeo Kageyama, commonly known as Mob, and how he develops and grows throughout his middle school years.

The most interesting part of this story is the fact that the set up of this show is like a typical shoujo show. Mob is an overpowered individual that fights villains and has rivals and even has a mentor figure. However, the show shatters all stereotypes that are associated with the genre and turn it on its head, bringing up complexities and showcasing the true terror of being an adolescent.

First of all, the character of Mob is unlike any other Shoujo characters we have seen before. He isn't as outgoing and energetic like Naruto or Luffy. He doesn't showcase his powers obsessively like Deku and Natsu. Instead, Mob's whole premise is to try to hide his powers because he fears himself. This type of ideology was so different, so unique that when I was watching the show I felt a certain type of sympathy for Mob's plight. he didn't want to hurt anyone, he just wanted to be the best version of himself without having to rely on his magic. Such an idea is very similar to how many young people today feel and how we do not want to rely on only one asset of ourselves and instead be well-rounded characters.

Second, the supporting cast of Mob Psycho 100 really elevates not just the show but Mob himself. From the Body Improvement Club to the Telepathy Club, to Ritsu, Dimple, and Reigen himself. From even the villains and antagonists, such as Claw and Hanazawa, all of them bring something tangible to the table. This shows those an amazing job when it comes to character development. Ritsu goes from angsty teen to a worried little brother that regrets all the hatred he has bottled up against his brother. Hanazawa goes from an obsessive power hungry prick to a friend that Mob relied on. But the best character is arguably Reigen himself. He is just so real and genuine. Sure he is a conman that uses Mob's power to get ahead in life, but he also cares about Mob so much that he is willing to sacrifice himself in other to save Mob.

Third, the animation of the show is so different and unique that I recommend everyone have this show on their 'what to recommend new anime watchers' list just because of how different it is to typical shows. Studio those an amazing job of not only bringing ONE's world to life but also adding their own imagery to the manga and animating how the fight scenes and the psychic powers themselves look like. It's so colorful and fluid that I can't really take my eyes off of it due to being afraid of losing something important.

My only complaint that I have against the show is that after the amazingness of the Claw arc the show just ends. It leaves a bitter taste in my mouth not knowing more of Mob's story. But I am not really worried about that due to the fact that Studio Bones has already green-lighted the second season of the show and the manga is finished so we can keep out hops that Studio Bones will finish the manga to its completion.

So with that, I give Mob Psycho 100 a 10/10.
